Seorang wanita muda 22 tahun bernama Brittany Prehn mengalami nasib sial saat menghadiri konser outdoor Country Thunder Music Festival di Winconsin, Amerika Serikat, yang diwarnai hujan badai, akhir pekan lalu.
Ketika sedang bercakap-cakap lewat ponsel, tiba-tiba saja petir menyambar Prehn. Lompatan listrik berenergi tinggi dari langit itu sampai membakar dan melontarkan sepatu yang dikenakannya.
Prehn pun mengalami cedera serius. Kedua telinganya mengeluarkan darah. Dia kemudian segera dilarikan ke rumah sakit Northern Illinous Medical Center.
"Kelihatannya seperti dia disambar saat berbicara di telepon," ujar seorang paramedis yang menangani Prehn, sebagaimana dirangkum KompasTekno dari Fox News, Kamis (26/7/2018).
Ponsel yang dipakai Prehn untuk menelepon juga rusak berat. Perangkat tersebut hangus dan layarnya pecah. "Gelombang listrik itu keluar melalui kakinya," lanjut sang paramedis.
Adakah hubungannya antara sambaran petir dan aktivitas Prehn yang menelepon ketika hujan badai? Pakar cuaca dari NOAA National Weather Service, John Jensenius, mengindikasikan bahwa Prehn sedang apes saja.
Jensenius mengatakan sambaran petir terjadi ketika seseorang berada di tempat dan waktu yang salah.
Sebuah video yang beredar memperlihatkan bahwa Prehn mungkin sedang berada di tempat terbuka ketika tersambar petir. Kebetulan saja dia saat itu sedang menelepon.
"Ponsel tidak memiliki risiko menarik petir," ujar Jensenius.
Masyarakat memang diimbau agar tidak memakai telepon rumah saat terjadi banyak petir. Namun ini karena telepon fixed linetersambung langsung ke jaringan dengan kabel fisik berbahan logam yang bisa dialiri petir. Di ponsel yang bersifat wireless, tidak ada sambungan kabel ke manapun.
Prehn sendiri pada Selasa kemarin dilaporkan masih hidup dan dalam keadaan stabil, kendati tetap harus dirawat intensif lantaran luka bakar yang dideritanya. Kabar terakhir menyebutkan dia telah ditransfer ke Loyola University Medical Center.
